The third digit represents the welding position(s) for which the electrode can be used. The next numerical digit, represents the position the consumable can be used in. The first two welding rod numbers stand for the tensile strength of the filler material. In e7018, the 70 means 70,000 psi or 70 kpi. 1 refers to a flat position (either 1g or 1f)

For example, the number 70 in a e7018 electrode indicates that the electrode will produce a weld bead with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi. For example, the lincoln 7018 welding rod numbers show that the tensile strength is 70,000 psi. For a 6010 rod, the coating and current are dictated by the #10. An electrode is a coated metal wire.
